Shirana Shahbazi for Ricola

She sees herself as a classic photographer and creates images using analog techniques, demonstrating her extensive knowledge of the craft of photography. At the same time, she uses her images for artistic purposes, for example by having them translated into different media, arranged to create multi-part works and exhibited as an installation. Staging and photographing everyday objects is also part of her fascinating image work, which reveals her understanding of images. This artistic skill was one of the reasons why Shirana Shahbazi was asked to photograph the Ricola herb drop.

Shahbazi does not pit representation and abstraction against each other, but instead uses them to create the sense of tension she aims for in her work. The aesthetics of object photography are combined with an artistic interest in the use of images. The care with which Shirana Shahbazi transforms her subjects into pictures of these things using still-life imagery, her technical mastery and her conceptual understanding of images are also expressed in the photograph of the Ricola herb drop.
